It has been said that
you would require a life time to explore the 15,000 islands of
Indonesia, but as the Immigration Department will only issue you
with a 30 day "visit visa" at the airport on your arrival, and at a
cost of US$30 a person. Visitors will have to plan their tour with
care if they are to get the most from their time here. - For the
latest regulations on Tourist Visas, have a look at one of the
Indonesian Government links which have been provided.
An interesting
tour might consist of a visit to the island of Java - Prambananand Borobudur Temples - Yogyakarta and Solo, and Mt Merapi,
in Central Java. Then travel by bus to see the smoking volcano of
Mt Bromo near Surabaya, East Java and on to Bali by road
and ferry, then by boatto Lombok, which are both
Islands sited off the end of East Java. If time permits, go further
east, via the island of Sumbawa to see the Komodo dragons
on Komodo and Rinca Islands and on to Flores Island
and to Maumere to see the three different colored lakes in the
crater of Mt Kelmutu. If this tour were taken it would be
best to fly to Jakarta from your home and return from Bali.
It is best to seek the
advise of Travel Agents if you want assistance on your visit to
Indonesia. The main Islands in Indonesia are well connected by road,
and in Java by rail. The air connections are also good, but if you
want to see the country and it's people, it is best to avoid flying,
the ferry connections between islands are also expellant. It would
be a good idea to read about Indonesia in the Lonely Planet Guidebook
before you start on your trip as this will give you
some idea as to what you can expect in this exceptionally beautiful
and interesting country.
