Rattan is a palm that grows like a vine with long, barbed leaves. It has a
bark-covered stalk that can reach up to 200 meters tall and only measures 0.5 - 4.0
centimetres in diameter. Both the bark and the stalk are used in furniture
production. The bark is cut into long strips which can be used for the seats and
backs of chairs. The bamboo-like stalk is used for the main structure of furniture,
yet is much stronger than bamboo. It can also be cut into strips to create various
designs to accent the furniture.
